Supreme Good, Like Water

Shàng Shàn Ruò Shuǐ is written 上善若水. Shàng Shàn means the
highest goodness; Ruò Shuǐ means “like water.” “The Highest Good Is
Like Water” is a close English translation.

Drawn from Chapter 8 of the Dao De Jing, the phrase honors water for
benefiting all things without striving or competing, and for finding
its place in what others may avoid. It offers an image of strength
that is quiet, responsive, and without display.

Each Bokwai work begins with real brush, ink, and Xuan paper. The paper is selected for its response to brush and ink, and some sheets may come from studio stock kept for years before use.

The original is carefully prepared as a digital artwork while preserving its brushwork, paper tone, seals, and material character. Digital tools are used for cleanup and presentation, never to replace the handwritten source.
