Begin with what
matters to you.

Share the value, relationship, name, memory, or turning point you want the work to hold. Artist Xu will help shape an expression that feels natural in Chinese, write it by hand on Xuan paper, and prepare the selected work as a high-resolution digital artwork.

A guided personal commission

Start with what the work is for.

Each original is written by Xu Hongke with brush and ink on Xuan paper.

Who or what is this work for?

Begin with the person, place, or purpose behind it. You can share the words or meaning in the next step.

Written by hand · delivered digitally

From your story to the finished work.

Every commission begins with context and is developed through language, brushwork, and artistic judgment before being carefully prepared for digital delivery.

  1. Your meaning is understood

Your words, name, or story are considered for intention, context, and cultural nuance.

  2. The expression is shaped

Artist Xu develops a Chinese expression that feels natural in language and balanced in calligraphy.

  3. Brush meets paper

The work is written by hand with brush and ink on Xuan paper. Variations are explored until the composition feels complete.

  4. The final work is prepared

The selected piece is scanned or photographed at high resolution and delivered with a guide to its meaning and use.

Ink is prepared, the brush is moistened and dipped, and an original Chinese calligraphy work is written by hand.

Useful details.

Do I need to know Chinese or have the words ready?

No. Describe who the work is for and what you want it to express in your own words. Artist Xu will shape a natural Chinese expression rather than translate your brief word for word. You can share names or characters you want considered, choose a visual direction, or leave those decisions to Xu. Reference images can be sent by replying to the studio email after checkout.

How many original works are in each commission?

A Short Original is one concise work; A Longer Work is one multi-line work. A Pair of Originals includes two distinct, separately handwritten works, and A Personal Collection includes three. If you choose a name, the longer work combines that name with one short related message in a single original. A pair or collection can show the same approved name in different brushwork, or include one related message as a separate original. The editor shows the price and contents before checkout.

Are the examples a preview of my own artwork?

No. They show real finished works and possible ways to live with calligraphy, not a preset design or visual draft of your commission. Xu develops and writes each new original by hand with brush and ink on Xuan paper, then digitises it for delivery. The objects shown in context are examples of use, not products included with your order.

Can Artist Xu create a Chinese name for me?

Yes. Xu considers sound, meaning, cultural nuance, and how the characters work together in calligraphy. You will see the proposed Chinese name and its English meaning before brushwork begins.

What will I approve before brushwork begins?

After checkout, the studio reviews your brief and emails the proposed Chinese wording and English meaning for your chosen work or works. For a name commission, this includes the Chinese name and any selected short message. You confirm the wording, names, and factual details before Xu writes the work. This stage does not include a visual draft or open-ended stylistic revisions. Bokwai will correct any error it makes at no cost.

How long will it take? Can I request a date?

The standard plan is a wording proposal within 2 business days. After you approve the Chinese wording and English meaning, the final digital package is due within 1 business day for A Short Original, 3 for A Longer Work, 5 for A Pair of Originals, or 7 for A Personal Collection. The delivery clock pauses while confirmation is pending. You can request a date in the editor; the studio will confirm what is possible by email.

What files will I receive, and when?

Custom files are sent after the work is complete; they are not an instant download. For each original, you receive high-resolution artwork, an original-brush transparent PNG, solid black and white transparent PNGs, print artwork, and a guide to the Chinese expression and its meaning. A Pair of Originals or A Personal Collection includes these files for each distinct original.

Will I receive the paper original or any of the objects shown?

Current personal commissions are delivered digitally. The physical work on Xuan paper, framed pieces, clothing, mugs, and other objects shown as examples are not included. Mounting, packaging, and shipping are not included unless a product page explicitly says otherwise.

Can I print the artwork, make a personal gift, or take it to a tattoo artist?

Yes. Personal use includes printing, framing, gifting, personal custom products, and a private tattoo consultation. Physical production and tattoo services are separate. For a tattoo, the file is a calligraphy reference rather than a ready-to-use stencil; your tattoo artist determines placement, scale, line weight, and execution.

Can I use the artwork commercially?

Personal commissions include personal-use rights only. Resale, branding, commercial merchandise, print-on-demand products, and file sharing are not included. For wider use, explore a separate brand project and written commercial licence.

Every digital commission begins as a physical work of brush and ink on Xuan paper. Current commissions are delivered digitally.

A brush, a pool of ink, a sheet of paper — enough to create a quiet place where the mind may rest.
