A few things worth knowing.

Before you choose
Every Bokwai work begins with brush and ink on Xuan paper, then is carefully prepared for its intended use. What you receive—and how it may be used—depends on whether you choose an existing work or commission one of your own.
What digital delivery means
Your purchase includes digital files, not a framed work or physical original. For Wall Art, you can choose the printer, paper, and format that best suit your space.
Existing work or commission?
Existing works are available to download after purchase. Commissioned works are developed for your story or project, then delivered when the writing and file preparation are complete.
Digital tools are used to prepare the handwritten work for delivery. Each product page lists exactly what is included.
Wall Art
Wall Art is prepared for personal printing and preserves the composition, brushwork, paper tone, and seals of the original where relevant. Each work is made to give a room something worth returning to.
Files and sizes
Each listing states its exact file formats, proportions, and print sizes before purchase. Files are prepared in high resolution for the sizes listed on that product page. If a size is not listed, please ask before altering the composition.
Where to print
Small tests work well at home. For a final piece, a local print studio or reputable online fine-art printer is a good choice. Matte or fine-art paper usually allows the brush texture to remain visible.
Print settings
Use the supplied orientation and size. Select full colour unless the print guide says otherwise, and check the preview before ordering. Avoid automatic crop, stretch, or fill-to-page settings unless the file specifically asks for them.
Aspect ratio
An aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. It protects the composition. Bokwai offers the ratios that suit a work rather than forcing every piece into the same frame.
Tattoo Calligraphy
Some words are meant to stay close. Tattoo Calligraphy begins with meaning, then is shaped for the scale, placement, and visual rhythm it will need on the body.
Made for the body
The script, composition, and scale are considered together. Depending on the work, Artist Xu may use regular, running, cursive, or clerical script so the expression remains clear and balanced at its intended size.
What you receive
Each Tattoo Calligraphy product includes a high-resolution reference file. Any additional formats, orientation notes, or meaning guides are listed clearly on the product page.
Before your appointment
Share the artwork with your tattoo artist before the appointment. Your artist is responsible for placement, stencil preparation, sizing, and any final technical adjustments needed for the body.
Meaning comes first
For custom tattoo work, we begin with the idea you want to carry. Artist Xu considers its intention, cultural nuance, and most natural expression in Chinese before the work is written.
Unless stated otherwise, Tattoo Calligraphy is licensed for one person’s personal tattoo use. It may be shared with your tattoo artist for that appointment, but may not be resold, reused for another client, or used commercially.
Custom work
Custom Calligraphy begins with what you want the work to hold—a name, memory, value, relationship, or turning point—and where it will live.
- Tell us your story. Share what the work should carry and where it will belong.
- Shape the expression. Artist Xu considers the meaning, cultural nuance, and most natural expression in Chinese.
- Write it by hand. The work is explored with brush and ink on Xuan paper until the composition feels complete.
- Receive the finished work. The selected piece is carefully digitized and delivered with the agreed files and meaning guide.
Delivery & use
How to access your files
For instant-download works, a download link is provided after successful payment. Custom files are sent once the work is complete. Please download and save your files promptly, preferably on a computer as well as your phone.
What is a ZIP file?
A ZIP is a folder of files packed into one download. Save it first, then open or extract it to see the artwork, print guide, and any supporting files inside.
Personal use
Wall Art may be printed for your own home or given as a personal gift. Tattoo Calligraphy may be shared with your tattoo artist for your own appointment. Files may not be redistributed, resold, used in products for sale, or supplied for generative-model training.
Returns and support
Because digital files cannot be returned once accessed, please review the product details before purchasing. If a file is missing, damaged, or not as described, contact Bokwai with your order information and we will help resolve the issue.
Common Questions
Can every Bokwai work be used for a tattoo?
No. A composition made for a wall may not remain clear at tattoo scale. Tattoo Calligraphy is selected or developed with legibility in mind, but your tattoo artist should make the final decisions about placement, sizing, stencil preparation, and technical adjustments.
Can I request a particular Chinese script style?
Yes. You may ask about regular, running, cursive, or clerical script. Artist Xu will recommend the style that best suits the meaning, intended size, placement, and use of the work.
How do you turn my English idea into Chinese?
We begin with the meaning you want the work to carry, rather than translating each word literally. Artist Xu considers intention, context, and cultural nuance before shaping an expression that feels natural in Chinese.
Is the physical original included?
No. Current Bokwai products and commissions are delivered digitally unless a product page explicitly says otherwise. The physical work on Xuan paper remains the source from which the final digital artwork is prepared.
How is the calligraphy created?
Artist Xu writes each work by hand with brush and ink on Xuan paper. Digital tools are used only to scan, clean, and prepare the selected work for its intended use.
Can I ask a question before ordering?
Yes. Use the contact page to share your question, intended use, or the product you are considering. We can clarify what is included and whether an existing work or custom commission is the better fit.
