About Bokwai
From living traditions, made to be lived with.
Bokwai is a culture-led lifestyle and design brand exploring how Chinese traditions can find a natural place in contemporary life. We begin with calligraphy: original works written by hand and prepared for the home, the body, and personal or commercial use.
We are interested in what happens when culture moves beyond display and becomes part of everyday choices—a word kept in view, a mark carried on the body, an object used daily, or a story passed between people.
Each calligraphy work begins with context. Meaning is considered in Chinese, not translated word for word, then shaped through language, composition, brush, ink, and Xuan paper. The selected work is carefully digitized while preserving the rhythm and variation of the hand.
Our first chapter grows from Chishui River Academy, founded in 2016 in Maotai Town, Guizhou, by calligrapher and educator Xu Hongke.
At the academy, children and adults learn through repetition, close observation, and sustained practice. They study not only how a character appears, but how it is structured, what it means, and how a line carries rhythm.
This living practice gives Bokwai its foundation: cultural knowledge is understood at its source before being given a new form for contemporary life.
Calligraphy is our beginning, not our boundary. As Bokwai grows, we will explore other Chinese works, objects, and stories through our own creation, collaborations with artists, and careful cultural research.
Across every medium, the intention remains the same: to respect where something comes from and help it belong naturally in the life around it.
We believe culture remains alive when it can be understood, used, and carried forward.
